The Shift in Production of Film-Making

With the advent of Internet digital technology, mp4. videos are now easily made by anyone, lasting a few minutes ordinarily; but potentially lasting up to three hours or longer. In other words, any director (fledgling or otherwise) will be able to, or can now make, a digital 2-hour film of high quality — providing all the cast and respective crew put their backs into the production.

What does this mean for the favored established film companies such as Scott Free, and Speilberg’s numerous productions? Merely that they will have far more competition in the future than they ever dreamed of.

Already the publication of books and video dramas and comedies have become commonplace on the Internet. YouTube is full of such videos.

So, what does this portend for film in general?

Your guess is as good as mine, of course; but it does seem to me that Hollywood will have to become far more cautious when they embark upon a production which could conceivably be done for 1/5 the cost by smaller, independent companies fully capable of getting the job done.

The economy of Hollywood will be quite interesting to watch in the next few years.
